The end result was a different line of guns which replaced the majority of the older products in 1963–1964. The immediate reaction in the shooting push and general public was overwhelmingly damaging: the popular verdict was that Winchester experienced sacrificed high-quality on the “cheapness gurus,” and Winchester was no longer thought to be a Status model, resulting in a marked lack of current market share. To this day, gun collectors take into consideration “article-sixty four” Winchesters to get both of those less appealing and less beneficial than their predecessors.
Based on what I have observed and browse in other sources, the oval (P) proof mark wasn't launched until 1908. Just before that time, Winchester marked “OF” (exterior fitted) on The underside of your barrel underneath the forend stock to the mail buy barrels. I've see quite a few of them on Model 1885 One Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
Even though there have already been some plausible theories presented in this article and elsewhere we may hardly ever know the answer to the initial problem concerning the receiver with the two marks proven inside a former publish. According to other substitute barrels I've found which contain both of those the WP and mail buy P and a statement from a previous Winchester staff that indicated they DID use some mail purchase parts when rebarreling rifles returned for support I believe that it's a replacement receiver which was set up and proofed at Winchester and also the mail purchase proof was also included to simply suggest it was not the original receiver. Which is just my opinion/guess. Hope that can help.
I picture Winchester would of stored and taken care of the barrel chamber reamers for all the varied 271+ calibers they developed. Along with plenty of barrel blanks laying all over. This is from a 1916 brochure in the factory’s goings-on.
I have been entertained and broadened by the knowledge contributed tirelessly by Bert and other gurus on this forum, and will likely try and add Gun safety , but will make an effort to not touch upon subjects I dont understand about
